In modern herbalism, Boneset is valued especially for its effect upon the respiratory system and its ability to reduce fevers.
It is believed by many to be practically unequaled in its effectiveness against colds and, as well as being prescribed to treat them, it is also often used in the treatment of influenza, acute bronchitis, catarrh, and feverish conditions.
The herb combines well with either Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), in the treatment of influenza. The herb has a mild cleansing and detoxifying action in the body and so is sometimes prescribed in the treatment of arthritic complaints and chronic skin conditions. In addition, it is also occasionally prescribed to treat intestinal worms.
